Don Ihde

Don Ihde was born in Hope, Kansas, on January 14, 1934, and died on January 17, 2024, just days after turning ninety. He earned his PhD in philosophy from Boston University in 1964 under Erazim Kohák, with a dissertation on Paul Ricœur’s phenomenological methodology. In 1969 he joined the faculty of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he helped found the Department of Philosophy in the early 1970s and remained for forty-three years, retiring in 2012 as Distinguished Professor.

Trained in the phenomenological tradition of Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau Ponty, but dissatisfied with that tradition’s relative silence on concrete technical instruments, Ihde shifted the axis of classical phenomenology — oriented toward consciousness and perception in general — toward the actual relations between human beings and specific technological artifacts. Technics and Praxis (1979) is generally identified as the first sustained work on the philosophy of technology written by an American author, opening a field that barely existed as an autonomous philosophical discipline in the United States at the time. It was, however, in Technology and the Lifeworld: From Garden to Earth (1990) that Ihde systematized the core of the program now known as postphenomenology: a non-anthropocentric inquiry into how instruments mediate and transform the human perception of the world.

In that book, Ihde distinguishes four basic types of relation between humans and technologies. In embodiment relations — such as wearing eyeglasses — the artifact is assimilated into the perceiving body, becoming nearly transparent to experience. In hermeneutic relations, such as reading a map or a scientific instrument, the technology functions as a text that refers to the world, while the subject remains aware of interpreting a representation. In alterity relations — a term borrowed from Levinas — technology is experienced as a quasi-other, a partial interlocutor, without ever becoming a full other. In background relations, finally, technologies such as refrigeration or automatic lighting shape the perceptual environment precisely by operating without demanding direct attention.
