Relativism — A position holding that truth, knowledge, or moral values are relative to an individual, culture, or historical period — there are no absolute, universal truths or values. Sophistical relativism (Protagoras: “man is the measure of all things”) was opposed by Socrates and Plato. In ethics, moral relativism denies cross-cultural ethical standards. In epistemology, cognitive relativism is a controversial position in post-structuralism and philosophy of science (Feyerabend).
