Pragmatism — A philosophical tradition founded by Peirce, James, and Dewey, holding that the meaning and truth of ideas are determined by their practical consequences. Truth is what “works” — what proves useful for action and inquiry. Dewey extends pragmatism to social philosophy and education: ideas are instruments for solving problems. Richard Rorty’s neo-pragmatism challenges the correspondence theory of truth and traditional epistemology.
