If there is one word that captures the founding gesture of Western philosophy, that word is φύσις (physis). Before the Greeks coined terms like “metaphysics,” “ontology,” or “epistemology,” they already had physis — and with it, a radically new way of questioning reality. Nearly all the earliest philosophical treatises were entitled Περὶ φύσεως (Perì Phýseōs, “On Nature”). Aristotle called the pre-Socratics physikoi — “those who investigate physis.” The very word “physics” descends directly from this concept.

Yet physis is not what we mean today by “nature.” It does not refer to the ensemble of trees, rivers, and mountains, nor to the material world studied by modern natural science. Physis is something more primordial: the sprouting, the emerging, the blossoming — the process by which things come to be what they are, of themselves, from themselves. To grasp this concept is to recover a dimension of thought that modernity has largely lost.

This article traces physis from its etymological root to its historical transformations — from the Milesians to Heidegger — showing why this concept remains indispensable for contemporary thought.


1. Etymology and semantic field

The Greek noun φύσις (physis) derives from the verb φύω (phýō), meaning to sprout, to grow, to be born, to emerge. The Indo-European root is *bhū-, which underlies the Latin fui (“I was,” i.e. “I came to be”), the English to be, and the German bin (“am”). Physis thus belongs to the semantic field of coming-into-being — not as mere accidental change, but as the active emergence of something that comes to be of its own accord.

This verbal core is decisive. Physis does not primarily designate a thing, but a process: the act of sprouting, unfolding, manifesting. A plant that germinates and grows toward the light; an animal that is born, develops, and reaches its mature form; a fire that erupts and spreads — all are instances of what the Greeks called physis. The kinship with φυτόν (phytón, “plant,” root of “phytotherapy,” “phytopathology”) is no accident: the plant is the paradigmatic case of something that sprouts by itself, without human intervention.

From the same semantic field come:

  • φυσικός (physikós): pertaining to physis — hence the Latin physica and the English “physics.”
  • φυσιολόγος (physiológos): one who rationally investigates (lógos) physis — a title Aristotle applies to the pre-Socratics.
  • φύσει (phýsei): “by nature,” as opposed to νόμῳ (nómōi), “by convention” — a distinction that will become central to the Sophistic movement.

The earliest Greek philosophical treatises almost uniformly bore the title Perì Phýseōs (“On Nature”). Diogenes Laërtius attributes this title to works by Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles, Anaxagoras, and others. That the first philosophers all wrote “on physis” reveals that philosophical inquiry was born as an investigation of physis — that is, as an attempt to understand the process by which things come to be, persist, and perish.

It is essential to note that physis never meant, for the ancient Greeks, mere “brute matter” or the “external world” studied by modern science. Physis includes movement, life, form, purpose — everything that makes a thing what it is. To translate physis simply as “nature” in the modern sense is, as Heidegger warned, to lose what was most profound in the original concept.


2. Physis in the pre-Socratics

2.1 Thales and the Milesians: physis as material substrate

The first philosophers — Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes of Miletus — are called physikoi or physiológoi by Aristotle precisely because their fundamental question concerned the physis of things. When Thales asserts that the archē is water (Metaphysics I, 3, 983b6-27), he is not simply saying that everything is chemically composed of water. He is saying that physis — the living, active principle that makes things be — has the character of the moist, the fluid, that which nourishes and sustains life.

Anaximander goes further: physis cannot be any determinate element, since no particular element could generate its contrary. Physis is the ápeiron (ἄπειρον), the unlimited — a principle containing all opposites within itself without being identical to any of them. Anaximenes, for his part, identifies physis with air, explaining transformations through condensation and rarefaction.

In all three cases, physis designates not only that of which things are made (the material substrate), but the active principle that generates, sustains, and ultimately reabsorbs them. The physis of the Milesians is at once matter and force, substrate and process.

2.2 Heraclitus: the physis that loves to hide

Heraclitus of Ephesus (c. 535–475 BCE) radicalizes the concept of physis by identifying it with becoming itself — the incessant flux of opposites. His most celebrated fragment on physis is DK 22 B 123:

φύσις κρύπτεσθαι φιλεῖ “Physis loves to hide.”

This fragment is dense and polysemous. That physis “loves to hide” may mean: (a) the deep essence of things does not show itself on the surface — one must go beyond appearances to grasp it; (b) the process of emergence already contains within itself a tendency toward concealment — what sprouts also withdraws, what is born also dies; (c) the totality of the real never gives itself all at once — it reveals and conceals in a perpetual interplay.

For Heraclitus, physis is fire — not empirical fire, but the principle of perpetual transformation. “This cosmos, the same for all, no god or man made, but it always was, is, and will be an ever-living fire, kindling in measures and going out in measures” (DK 22 B 30). Fire is the image of physis as becoming: that which never remains identical with itself, yet precisely through changing maintains an order — the lógos governing the tension of opposites.

Heraclitus also declares that “the hidden harmony is stronger than the visible” (DK 22 B 54), reinforcing the idea that physis operates at depth, behind sensible appearance. Opposites — day and night, winter and summer, war and peace, life and death — are manifestations of a deeper unity that only the lógos can apprehend.

2.3 Parmenides: physis vs. appearance

Parmenides of Elea (c. 515–450 BCE) stands at the opposite pole from Heraclitus. In his poem On Nature (Περὶ φύσεως), Parmenides rigorously distinguishes two paths: the path of truth (alétheia), according to which “being is and non-being is not,” and the path of opinion (dóxa), which describes the world of appearances and becoming.

For Parmenides, authentic physis — the truth of being — is one, immobile, eternal, ungenerated, and imperishable. Becoming, multiplicity, and change belong to the domain of opinion, not of true reality. This places physis in tension with the meaning given to it by the Milesians and Heraclitus: if physis is what sprouts and transforms, how can it be reconciled with a being that is absolutely immobile?

This tension between physis as becoming and physis as permanent being will run through all of Greek philosophy — and Aristotle will attempt to resolve it with his theory of act and potency.

2.4 Empedocles: physis as cosmic cycle

Empedocles of Acragas (c. 490–430 BCE), in his poem also titled On Nature, proposes that physis is not a single element but four roots (rhizómata): earth, water, air, and fire — eternal, incorruptible, and qualitatively distinct. Two cosmic forces govern the combination and separation of these roots: Love (Philía), which aggregates, and Strife (Neîkos), which disperses. Physis is thus a perpetual cosmic cycle of union and dispersal. There is no birth or death in the absolute sense — only mixture and separation of permanent elements.


3. Physis vs. Nomos: the great Sophistic opposition

3.1 The problem

In the fifth century BCE, the expansion of the Greek world — contacts with other peoples, colonization, wars — made it plain that laws, customs, and conventions varied enormously from city to city. The Greeks sacrificed to Zeus; the Persians worshipped Ahura Mazda; the Egyptians mummified their dead. Confronted with this diversity, an inevitable question arose: what is natural (physis) and what is mere convention (nomos)?

This question — the physis/nomos opposition — became the central axis of Sophistic thought and carries consequences that reverberate to this day in ethics, politics, and law.

3.2 Antiphon

The Sophist Antiphon (c. 480–411 BCE) explicitly distinguished between what exists by physis and what exists by nomos. In his surviving fragments (Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 1364), he argues that the demands of physis — the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain — are true and universal, whereas the laws of the city are conventional and frequently contrary to nature. One who violates the law but is unseen escapes punishment; one who violates physis suffers the consequences inevitably, whether seen or not.

3.3 Callicles and the “justice of nature”

In Plato’s Gorgias (482c–486d), the character Callicles argues that physis and nomos are opposed. By nature, it is just for the stronger to dominate the weaker — as one observes among animals and among cities. Laws, however, are inventions of the weak to restrain the strong. True justice, according to Callicles, is the justice of physis: the right of the stronger.

Thrasymachus, in Book I of the Republic (338c), advances an analogous position: justice is the advantage of the stronger.

3.4 Protagoras and the necessary convention

Protagoras of Abdera (c. 490–420 BCE), as depicted in the Platonic dialogue that bears his name (Protagoras, 320c–328d), presents the myth of Prometheus and Epimetheus to argue that nomos — law, political convention — is not opposed to physis but its necessary complement. Humans are by nature fragile; they need téchnē politikḗ (the art of living together) to survive. Nomos does not contradict physis; it fulfills it.

3.5 Lasting implications

The physis/nomos opposition is the embryo of debates running through the entire history of philosophy: natural law theory (is there a natural right?) versus legal positivism (all law is convention); naturalistic ethics (morality is grounded in human nature) versus moral constructivism (values are social constructions); the distinction between sex (physis) and gender (nomos) in contemporary discussions. In every case, the Sophists’ question remains alive: what belongs to physis and what belongs to nomos?


4. Physis in Aristotle

4.1 The canonical definition

The most influential formulation of the concept of physis in the entire history of philosophy appears in Aristotle’s Physics (II, 1, 192b20-23):

“Nature (physis) is a principle and cause of motion and rest in that to which it belongs primarily, of itself and not incidentally.”

This definition is dense and warrants careful analysis. Aristotle is saying that:

  1. Physis is a principle (archē) and a cause (aitía) — not merely a thing or a substance, but that which explains why something moves or remains at rest.
  2. Of motion and of rest — physis accounts for both change and stability. A stone falls (motion in accordance with physis); a stone on the ground remains (rest in accordance with physis).
  3. In that to which it belongs — the physis of a thing is in the thing itself, not in something else. The physis of an oak is in the oak; the principle of movement of a bed is in the carpenter (who is external).
  4. Primarily, of itself and not incidentally — a physician who heals himself possesses the physis of a body that heals, but not qua physician: the coincidence is incidental.

4.2 Physis and technē

The most illuminating distinction Aristotle draws is between physis and technē (τέχνη, art/craft). A natural being has within itself the principle of its own motion: a seed germinates by itself; fire rises by itself; an animal moves by itself. An artifact, by contrast, owes its motion and form to an external agent: a bed does not make itself; a statue does not carve itself (Physics II, 1, 192b8-32).

Aristotle observes that if a buried bed were to sprout, what would grow would not be a bed but wood — because the arrangement that makes it a bed is incidental relative to the physis of wood, which is the oak. Physis is therefore deeper than technē: it concerns what a thing is of itself, not what has been imposed on it from without.

4.3 The four causes applied to physis

Aristotle extends to physis his doctrine of the four causes (Physics II, 3, 194b16-195a3):

  • Material cause: that from which something is made (the bronze of the statue, the wood of the bed).
  • Formal cause: the form, the definition, the essence — the eîdos that makes a thing what it is.
  • Efficient cause: that which initiates motion or change (the father begets the child).
  • Final cause: the télos, that toward which a thing tends — the end, the full realization.

In the domain of physis, the formal and final causes converge: the physis of an oak is at once the form that defines it and the end toward which an acorn tends. This is why Aristotle says that “physis is an end (télos)” (Physics II, 2, 194a28-29). To understand the physis of a thing is to understand what it exists for — its intrinsic purpose.

4.4 Physis as entelecheia

In Metaphysics IX, 8 (1050a21-23), Aristotle links physis to entelecheia (ἐντελέχεια) — the full actualization of a potency. The physis of a thing is its state of complete realization: the physis of a human being is the adult, rational, fully active human; the physis of an oak is the mature oak, not the acorn. Physis is not the starting point of development but its culmination — “the nature of each thing is what each thing is when its coming-into-being has been completed” (Politics I, 2, 1252b32-33).

This teleological conception of physis — physis as the intrinsic end of each being — will dominate Western philosophy until the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century.


5. Physis in Hellenistic and Roman philosophy

5.1 Stoicism: living in accordance with physis

For the Stoics — Zeno of Citium (c. 334–262 BCE), Chrysippus (c. 279–206 BCE), Seneca (c. 4 BCE–65 CE), Epictetus (c. 50–135 CE), and Marcus Aurelius (121–180 CE) — physis is not merely an object of theoretical inquiry: it is the supreme criterion of ethics. The fundamental Stoic formula is “to live in accordance with nature” (homologouménōs tēi phýsei zēn), transmitted by Diogenes Laërtius (Lives of the Eminent Philosophers VII, 87).

But what does “nature” mean for the Stoics? Cosmic physis is the universal lógos — an immanent divine reason that pervades and governs all things. The Stoics identify this physis with pneuma (πνεῦμα, “breath” or “spirit”), an active blend of fire and air that penetrates all matter and confers upon it cohesion, life, and intelligence. The entire cosmos is a rational living being, and to live in accordance with physis means to align one’s individual reason with cosmic reason — to accept events determined by fate (heimarménē) as expressions of the universal lógos.

Stoic ethics is therefore not a “return to nature” in the Rousseauian sense. It is an ethics of cosmic rationality: the physis to which we must conform is not the brute nature of impulses, but the rational order governing the whole.

5.2 Epicureanism: physis as atomic order

For Epicurus (341–271 BCE) and Lucretius (c. 99–55 BCE), physis is the ensemble of natural processes explicable through atomism — the theory that everything that exists is composed of atoms and void. Lucretius’s great poem, De Rerum Natura (“On the Nature of Things”), is a systematic exposition of Epicurean physis: natural phenomena — from lightning to plant growth, from love to death — are explicable by mechanical movements of atoms, without recourse to any divine intervention.

The ethical aim of Epicureanism is to free human beings from fear of the gods and of death by showing that physis operates according to regular natural laws — not divine whims. To understand physis is, for Epicurus, a condition of the soul’s tranquility (ataraxía).


6. Transformations of the concept

6.1 Natura in medieval philosophy

The Latin translation of physis is natura (from nasci, “to be born” — the same semantic root of “springing forth”). In medieval Christian philosophy, natura is subordinated to a higher principle: God the Creator. Nature does not exist by itself; it is divine creation (creatura). Augustine of Hippo (354–430) distinguishes Creator and creature: physis is no longer the self-subsistent principle of the Greeks, but the effect of a transcendent will.

Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274), following Aristotle, preserves the concept of natura as an intrinsic principle of motion, but subordinates natural causality to divine causality: God is the first cause; natural causes are secondary causes operating within the order established by the Creator. Nature has its own laws — but these laws are, ultimately, expressions of divine intelligence.

6.2 Renaissance: the return to physis

The Renaissance (fifteenth–sixteenth centuries) marks a return to physis in a sense closer to the Greek original. Thinkers such as Giordano Bruno (1548–1600) and Bernardino Telesio (1509–1588) rehabilitate the idea of a living, active, self-sufficient nature. Bruno, in De la causa, principio et uno (1584), conceives nature as infinite and animate — a physis that is at once God and world (Deus sive Natura, a formula Spinoza will take up).

6.3 The scientific revolution: nature as mechanism

The scientific revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries radically transforms the concept of physis. With Galileo (1564–1642), Descartes (1596–1650), and Newton (1643–1727), nature ceases to be a living organism endowed with purpose and becomes a mechanism governed by mathematical laws. Descartes reduces nature to res extensa — inert matter in motion, explicable by geometry and the laws of impact. Final causes are banished from physics: “we must not imagine that things were made for us,” Descartes says (Principles of Philosophy I, 28).

In philosophical terms, this transformation represents a break with Aristotelian physis. For Aristotle, nature is an internal principle of motion and purpose; for modern science, nature is passive matter governed by external laws (the laws of mechanics). Physis loses its life, its soul, its teleology.

6.4 Kant: nature and freedom

Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) systematizes this break by rigorously distinguishing between the domain of nature (Natur) and the domain of freedom (Freiheit). In the Critique of Pure Reason (1781), nature is defined as “the totality of appearances insofar as they are connected according to universal laws” (A 418/B 446). Kantian nature is the world as science knows it: determined, predictable, devoid of freedom.

But human beings also belong to the domain of freedom — as moral agents, they escape natural determination. The Critique of Practical Reason (1788) and the Critique of the Power of Judgment (1790) attempt to articulate these two domains without ever fusing nature and freedom. Physis, now called Natur, becomes the object of science — and nothing more.


7. Heidegger and the recovery of physis

7.1 The diagnosis: the forgetting of physis

Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) held that the translation of physis by natura and then by “nature” in the modern sense represented one of the great losses in the history of Western thought. In his lecture course Introduction to Metaphysics (1935, published 1953), Heidegger devotes decisive pages to recovering the originary sense of Greek physis.

Heidegger argues that for the archaic Greeks, physis did not mean “nature” in the narrow sense of “natural world” (as opposed to culture, history, or spirit). Physis was the name for being in its totality: the emerging that opens up, the sprouting that unfolds and sustains itself. Physis is “the rising, prevailing power” (das aufgehende Walten) — it designates the fundamental event by which beings come into presence, emerge from concealment, and show themselves.

7.2 Physis as emergence and unconcealment

For Heidegger, physis is intimately linked to alétheia (ἀλήθεια) — truth as unconcealment. If physis is the emerging that opens up, then it is, in itself, an event of truth: things come into presence, emerge from concealment, show themselves as they are. Physis is, in this sense, the originary event in which being gives itself — and philosophy was born as attentiveness to this event.

Heidegger takes up Heraclitus’s fragment (DK 22 B 123) — “physis loves to hide” — and interprets it as an expression of this dynamic of revelation and concealment: physis shows itself, but at the same time withdraws; it is presence that contains absence within itself. Authentic thinking, for Heidegger, is that which remains attentive to this interplay of unconcealment and concealment — unlike traditional metaphysics, which fixes being in static categories (substance, subject, object) and forgets the event of physis.

7.3 Critique of modern translation

Heidegger insists that translating physis as “nature” (Natur) is impoverishing, because the modern word carries with it the reduction effected by science: nature as the domain of the measurable, the calculable, the available for technical manipulation. Greek physis, by contrast, named the totality of beings — including the gods, history, art, and thought. To reduce physis to “nature” is, according to Heidegger, a symptom of the “forgetting of being” (Seinsvergessenheit) that characterizes the history of Western metaphysics.


8. Conclusion: why physis matters today

The trajectory of physis — from the originary emergence of the Greeks to the nature-object of modern science — is not merely a scholarly curiosity. It reveals something about the way the West relates to reality: a relationship that began as attentiveness to the spontaneous sprouting of things and progressively became a will to technical mastery over the world.

In contemporary discussions of ecology and environmental crisis, recovering the concept of physis can offer something that modern science, by itself, does not provide: an understanding of nature as something not simply at the disposal of human beings — as a resource to be exploited — but as an autonomous and originary process that has value in itself. The ecological crisis is, in a certain sense, a consequence of reducing physis to “nature” in the modern sense: when nature is merely inert matter, there is no intrinsic reason not to exploit it indefinitely.

In environmental ethics, the Sophistic question physis/nomos resurfaces with urgency: is our current way of life in accordance with physis, or is it an unsustainable conventional construction? What does human nature (if such a thing exists) demand of us?

In the philosophy of science, the concept of physis reminds us that modern science operates with a particular conception of nature — nature as a mathematizable mechanism — which is not the only possible one and which carries profound philosophical consequences.

Physis, then, is not a dead concept. It is a Greek word that continues to pose questions — questions that contemporary thought struggles to formulate precisely because it has forgotten what physis meant before it became “nature.” Recovering that originary meaning is not archaizing nostalgia; it is a condition for thinking critically about the present.
