The Problem and Its Persistence

Few philosophical problems are simultaneously so ancient and so resistant as the mind-body problem. In its simplest formulation: what is the relationship between the mind — with its thoughts, sensations, emotions, experiences — and the body, especially the brain? The question seems immediate and even obvious; the difficulty lies in answering it without falling into contradictions or into mysteries greater than the original.

Two types of answer present themselves. Dualism holds that mind and body are of distinct natures — that there is something in the mind that cannot be reduced to the physical. Monism holds that there is only one kind of substance or property: in its materialist (or physicalist) version, everything is ultimately physical. The history of philosophy of mind is largely the history of the tension between these positions and of the attempts to overcome it.


Descartes and Substance Dualism

The classical formulation of the problem belongs to René Descartes (1596–1650). In the Meditationes de Prima Philosophia (1641), Descartes presents the method of doubt: he can doubt the existence of the body, the senses, and the external world, but he cannot doubt that he doubts — and therefore that he exists as a thinking thing. The cogito ergo sum establishes the mind (the res cogitans, thinking thing) as immediately certain.

The body, in turn, is res extensa: substance that occupies space, measurable and divisible. Mind and body are, for Descartes, radically distinct substances: the mind is indivisible, incorporeal, not located in space; the body is divisible, spatial, mechanically determined. This position is substance dualism.

The immediate problem is interaction: if mind and body are substances of opposite kinds, how can they interact causally? When I decide to move my hand, how does the will (immaterial) affect the arm (material)? Descartes proposed, without great conviction, that interaction occurred in the pineal gland — which his contemporaries already found unsatisfactory. Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia formulated the objection with precision in her correspondence with Descartes (1643): for something immaterial to cause movement in something material, the immaterial would need some spatial property. The objection remains without a satisfactory answer in Cartesian dualism.


Monism: Spinoza and Parallelism

Baruch de Spinoza (1632–1677) rejected Cartesian dualism radically. In his Ethica ordine geometrico demonstrata (published posthumously in 1677), Spinoza argues that there can only be one substance — God or Nature (Deus sive Natura). Thought and extension are two attributes of this single substance, not two substances. A mode (a particular thing) can be described under either the attribute of thought or the attribute of extension — but these are two faces of the same reality, not two interacting domains.

Spinozan parallelism avoids the interaction problem: mind and body do not cause each other because they are the same event described in two ways. But at the cost of denying direct psychophysical causation — a position many find counter-intuitive.


Eighteenth-Century Materialism

The eighteenth century produced more radical versions of materialism. Julien Offray de La Mettrie (1709–1751), physician and philosopher, published L’Homme Machine (1747), a work that caused scandal by extending the Cartesian mechanistic metaphor — which Descartes had applied only to animals — to the whole human being. For La Mettrie, the human being is wholly a machine; mental states are physical states of the nervous system. The soul does not exist as a separate substance: thought is a function of the brain, just as digestion is a function of the stomach.

This position — materialism in its eighteenth-century form — shocked contemporaries. La Mettrie was forced into exile. But the intuition was robust: if the brain can be damaged and personality changes, if drugs alter emotions and perceptions, it is implausible that the mind is entirely separate from the brain.


The Twentieth Century: Identity Theory

The philosophically rigorous version of modern materialism is type-type identity theory, developed by U.T. Place in “Is Consciousness a Brain Process?” (British Journal of Psychology, 1956) and by J.J.C. Smart in “Sensations and Brain Processes” (Philosophical Review, 1959).

The thesis is direct: mental states are identical to brain states. Pain is (is identical to) C-fibre activation; belief is a neural pattern. The identity is of types: every instance of mental type M is identical to some instance of physical type P. The theory resolves the interaction problem (mind and body interact because they are the same) but faces the objection of multiple realisability, formulated by Hilary Putnam: if the same pain can be realised by very different brain states (in humans, octopuses, machines), then “pain” cannot be identically the same physical state in all cases.


Functionalism

Hilary Putnam’s response to identity theory was functionalism (articles of the 1960s, especially “Psychological Predicates”, 1967). Mental states are defined by the functional role they play — by causal relations to sensory inputs, behavioural outputs, and other states — not by the physical substrate that realises them. Pain is what is caused by injury and causes avoidance behaviour, regardless of whether it is realised by neurons or silicon chips.

Functionalism became the dominant position in anglophone philosophy of mind and cognitive science. But it generated important objections. Ned Block (“Troubles with Functionalism”, 1978) distinguished between access consciousness (information available for reasoning and behavioural control) and phenomenal consciousness (the subjective quality of experience). Functionalism can explain the former, but seems incapable of explaining the latter: a machine could perform all the mental functions and yet, in principle, entirely lack subjective experience.

Jerry Fodor (1935–2017) developed functionalism towards the language of thought hypothesis (The Language of Thought, 1975): mental states are representations in a formal computational system — there is a “mentalese”, an internal symbolic system over which cognitive operations are computations.


Eliminativism

Paul Churchland (“Eliminative Materialism and the Propositional Attitudes”, Journal of Philosophy, 1981) and Patricia Churchland (Neurophilosophy, 1986) proposed that folk psychology — the set of concepts with which we ordinarily explain behaviour (beliefs, desires, intentions, pains) — is an empirical theory about the workings of the mind and, like any theory, is falsifiable. The Churchlands argue that it will be eliminated just as phlogiston was eliminated by chemistry: beliefs and desires will give way to neural states described in neuroscientific vocabulary.

Eliminativism is the most radically materialist position: it not only reduces the mental to the physical, but denies that ordinary mental concepts correspond to real categories of the world.


Davidson’s Anomalous Monism

Donald Davidson proposed an original solution in “Mental Events” (1970). Anomalous monism asserts that every mental event is identical to some physical event (monism) while denying that there are strict psychophysical laws (anomaly). The mental is not reducible to the physical because mental descriptions (in terms of beliefs, desires, reasons) do not fit into deterministic laws the way physical descriptions do. There is a fundamental asymmetry: the mental is normative (subject to standards of rationality) while the physical is merely causal.

Anomalous monism allows mental causation (mental events cause physical events) without reduction: we can acknowledge that deciding to leave home caused the movement of the arm without asserting that there are precise laws of the form “belief of type X + desire of type Y produces movement of type Z”.


The Problem of Qualia: Frank Jackson and Mary

Perhaps the most powerful argument against physicalism is Frank Jackson’s knowledge argument. In “Epiphenomenal Qualia” (Philosophical Quarterly, 1982) and “What Mary Didn’t Know” (Journal of Philosophy, 1986), Jackson presents the case of Mary: a brilliant scientist who spent her entire life in a black-and-white room, but who studied everything there is to know about physics, neurochemistry, and colour processing. Mary knows that 700 nm wavelengths stimulate the L-cones of the retina, activate a particular region of the visual cortex, and cause behaviour of saying “red”.

When Mary leaves the room and sees red for the first time, she learns something new — what it is like to see red. If she learns something new, then there was something she did not know before leaving the room, despite having all physical knowledge. Therefore — Jackson argues — physical knowledge is not complete knowledge about the mind; there are phenomenal properties (qualia) that escape physical description.

The argument generated an enormous literature of responses: the “ability hypothesis” (Lewis, Nemirow: Mary learns a skill, not a new fact), the “new concept hypothesis” (Mary learns the same fact by a new mode of presentation), and many others. Jackson eventually revised his original conclusion, adopting a position closer to physicalism. But the argument remains one of the most influential in philosophy of mind.


The Hard Problem: Chalmers

The most precise and influential formulation of the central problem of consciousness was proposed by David Chalmers in “Facing Up to the Problem of Consciousness” (Journal of Consciousness Studies, 1995) and in The Conscious Mind (1996). Chalmers distinguishes the easy problems — explaining cognitive functions such as memory, attention, verbal report, behavioural control — from the hard problem: why is there subjective experience at all?

The easy problems are difficult in a technical sense, but they are accessible to science: it would suffice to identify the mechanisms. The hard problem is different in kind: even if we had a complete explanation of all the neural mechanisms of colour perception, the question “but why is there something it is like to see red?” would remain unanswered. The hard problem is the problem of phenomenal consciousness — of qualia, of the “what it is like to be” of Thomas Nagel (“What Is It Like to Be a Bat?”, Philosophical Review, 1974).

Chalmers’s philosophical zombies argument makes the problem precise: a being physically identical to a human, but without conscious experience, is conceivable. If conceivable, it is possible in some relevant metaphysical sense. Therefore, consciousness is not identical to any physical state. Chalmers concludes in favour of naturalistic property dualism: the physical world is real and science is valid, but there are phenomenal properties that do not reduce to the physical; psychophysical laws are fundamental natural laws.


Contemporary Panpsychism

An increasingly discussed alternative is panpsychism: the thesis that experience (or something proto-experiential) is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of reality. Galen Strawson (“Realistic Monism: Why Physicalism Entails Panpsychism”, Journal of Consciousness Studies, 2006) argues that a physicalism truly committed to the real must admit that experience is part of the real — and therefore that the physical includes experiential properties. Philip Goff (Galileo’s Error, 2019) argues that Galileo’s mistake was to remove subjective qualities from the scientific description of the world — panpsychism would correct that error.

Panpsychism faces the combination problem: how do simple experiences (of subatomic particles, for example) combine to form the complex, unified experience of a human being? It is a hard problem of a different kind, but equally tenacious.


Convergences and Open Questions

The mind-body problem remains open. Physicalism underlies cognitive science and neuroscience, but the hard problem still has no widely accepted solution. Property dualism and panpsychism are gaining serious defenders. The debate has crossed into discussions of artificial intelligence: if mind is function, would sufficiently complex machines be conscious? Or is there something in the biological substrate — in causal structure, evolutionary context, embodiment — that is indispensable for experience?

The question is not merely technical. At stake are the nature of the subject, the validity of free will, the possibility of moral experience, and what it means to be a conscious creature in the universe.
