There is a moment in the history of thought when human beings stopped asking who made the world and began asking what the world is made of. This shift — from myth to rational inquiry — finds its most concentrated expression in a single Greek word: ἀρχή (arché). Principle, origin, foundation, command: the arché is, at once, the first thing that exists and the reason why everything else exists. To understand this concept is to understand the founding gesture of Western philosophy.
This article examines the arché in its linguistic, historical, and philosophical dimensions: from its etymological root to the use that the pre-Socratic philosophers made of it, through Aristotle’s systematization and the echoes the concept projects into contemporary thought.
1. Etymology and semantic field of ἀρχή
The Greek noun ἀρχή (arché) derives from the verb ἄρχω (árchō), which carries two intimately connected clusters of meaning:
- To begin, to initiate, to originate — ἄρχω in the temporal sense: that which comes first, the starting point.
- To command, to govern, to lead — ἄρχω in the sense of authority: that which exercises power, that which rules, that which presides.
This dual semantics is not accidental. In Greek thinking, that which is first is also that which governs. What stands at the origin holds authority over what proceeds from it. The principle is not merely the chronological beginning — it is the ontological foundation, the reason for being.
The semantic field of ἀρχή radiates throughout the Greek language and, through it, into the European languages:
- ἄρχων (archon): the ruler, the magistrate — the one who commands. In Athens, the archontes were the supreme magistrates of the city.
- μοναρχία (monarchía): rule by one — monos (single) + arché (command).
- ἀναρχία (anarchía): absence of command, absence of a governing principle — an- (without) + arché.
- ἀρχιτέκτων (architéktōn): the master builder — the one who commands (arché) the art (téchnē) of construction.
- ἀρχαῖος (archaîos): ancient, primordial — that which belongs to the beginning.
When the first Greek philosophers asked about the arché of the cosmos, they were therefore asking two questions simultaneously: what is the origin of everything? and what governs everything? The arché is not merely the material out of which things are made; it is the active principle that sustains them in existence, regulates their transformations, and confers order upon them. This productive ambiguity — between genesis and governance, between origin and ground — runs through the entire history of philosophy.
It is worth noting that the noun ἀρχή appears frequently in ordinary Greek: it means the “beginning” of a speech, the “start” of a war, the “principle” of a demonstration, the “rule” of a city. The properly philosophical use — arché as the constitutive principle of reality — is an appropriation and intensification of this ordinary semantic field, carried out by the Milesian thinkers in the sixth century BC.
2. The birth of the question of arché
2.1 From myth to logos
Before philosophy, the Greeks explained the origin and order of the world through mythical narratives. In Hesiod’s Theogony (c. 700 BC), the cosmos arises from Chaos, Gaia (Earth), and Eros; natural phenomena are actions of personified gods — Zeus hurls thunderbolts, Poseidon stirs the sea, Demeter brings forth harvests. Myth is not arbitrary — it possesses an internal logic, a narrative coherence — but it operates through personification and does not demand demonstration.
The transition to logos consists precisely in replacing this personalistic explanation with an impersonal and rational one. Instead of asking “which god did this?”, the first philosophers ask “from what natural principle does this proceed?” and “by what mechanism does this transform?”. The answer does not appeal to divine wills but to regular, observable natural processes — condensation, rarefaction, separation of opposites.
This transition was not abrupt. As the Hellenist Jean-Pierre Vernant notes in The Origins of Greek Thought (1962), mythical cosmogonies already contained philosophical questions in embryo: Hesiod asks what came first (Chaos); Homer suggests that Ocean is the “genesis of all things” (Iliad, XIV, 201). But the qualitative leap occurs when the answer ceases to be a genealogical narrative of gods and becomes a rational proposition about the nature (phýsis) of things.
2.2 The context of the Ionian colonies
It is no accident that philosophy was born in Miletus, one of the most prosperous and cosmopolitan cities of the ancient Greek world. Situated on the coast of Ionia (present-day western Turkey), Miletus was a commercial hub in direct contact with the Egyptian, Babylonian, and Persian civilizations. Its merchants were familiar with Egyptian practical geometry and Babylonian astronomy. This plurality of explanations for the same natural phenomena invited a critical question: if the Egyptians explain the flooding of the Nile one way and the Babylonians explain eclipses another way, which explanation is correct? And is there a more fundamental explanation that lies behind all of them?
Moreover, the political structure of the Ionian póleis — where decisions were made through public debate, and arguments were judged by their logical force rather than the sacred authority of those who uttered them — created an environment conducive to rational argumentation. The agora prepared the ground for philosophy.
2.3 Aristotle’s retrospective naming
It is Aristotle who, in Book I of the Metaphysics (983b–984a), retrospectively formulates the pre-Socratic tradition as a search for the material principle of things. He writes that “most of the first philosophers considered that the principles of all things were only those of a material nature” (Metaphysics I, 3, 983b6-8). Aristotle calls these principles archaí and organizes his predecessors according to the type of arché each one proposed.
This Aristotelian systematization — though indispensable, since it is often our primary source on the pre-Socratics — must be read with caution. Aristotle reads his predecessors through the lens of his own categories (the four causes), and sometimes projects onto them distinctions they would not have formulated in those terms. The pre-Socratics probably did not conceive of the arché as merely a “material cause” in the Aristotelian sense; for them, the principle was simultaneously matter, force, and reason for being — distinctions that Aristotle would systematically separate.
3. The arché in the Milesian thinkers
3.1 Thales of Miletus (~624–546 BC): water
Thales is recognized by Aristotle as the founder of natural philosophy (Metaphysics I, 3, 983b20-22). His fundamental thesis is that water (hýdōr) is the arché of all things. Thales left no writings; we know his thought exclusively through later testimonies, above all those of Aristotle.
Why water? Aristotle suggests several possible reasons: the observation that the nourishment of all living beings is moist, that vital heat arises from moisture, that the seeds of all things have a moist nature (Metaphysics I, 3, 983b22-27). Water is the element that takes all three states (solid, liquid, gaseous — though Thales would not have used this terminology), that is present in all living beings, and that appears to be a necessary condition for life.
It is essential to understand that Thales’ “water” is not simply the water we drink or see in rivers. It is a cosmological principle: the primordial substance from which all things originate and to which all things return. In proposing water as arché, Thales performs three decisive philosophical gestures:
- Reduction of multiplicity to unity: the infinite diversity of phenomena is traced back to a single principle.
- Naturalization of explanation: the principle is not a god but a natural element.
- Demand for universality: the explanation must hold for everything — not merely for this or that phenomenon, but for the totality of what is.
3.2 Anaximander (~610–546 BC): the ápeiron
A student of Thales, Anaximander takes a decisive step by proposing as arché not a determinate element but the ápeiron (τὸ ἄπειρον) — the indeterminate, the unlimited, the infinite. We possess from him what is considered the oldest surviving philosophical fragment in the West, preserved by Simplicius (Commentary on the Physics, 24, 13): “The things that are perish into those from which they come to be, according to necessity, for they pay penalty and retribution to each other for their injustice according to the ordering of time.”
Anaximander’s reasoning contains an implicit critique of Thales. If the arché were water — a determinate element — how could it generate its contrary, fire? A specific element would favour things similar to itself and destroy those contrary to it, preventing cosmic equilibrium. The principle must therefore be indeterminate — without any specific quality — so as to generate all opposites without privileging any.
From the ápeiron, pairs of opposites (hot/cold, dry/wet) separate through a cosmic process. This separation is a kind of “injustice” (adikía), since each determinate thing usurps the space of others. Cosmic justice requires that things return to the ápeiron, dissolving back into the indeterminate principle from which they came. The cosmos is thus governed by a law of balance and retribution.
3.3 Anaximenes (~585–525 BC): air
A student of Anaximander, Anaximenes proposes air (aér) as arché. At first glance, this appears to be a step backwards — a return to a determinate element. But Anaximenes’ innovation lies in the mechanism by which air transforms into all things: condensation and rarefaction.
When air rarefies, it becomes more subtle and hot — producing fire. When it condenses progressively, it becomes wind, then cloud, then water, then earth, then stone. All the diversity of reality is explained by quantitative variations of a single substrate. Anaximenes thus introduces, for the first time, an explicit and gradual physical mechanism for the transformation of the arché into particular things.
Air is also pneûma (breath, respiration) — that which sustains life. “Just as our soul, being air, holds us together, so breath and air encompass the whole cosmos,” states a testimony preserved by Aëtius (I, 3, 4). The arché is not merely matter: it is a vital principle.
The sequence Thales → Anaximander → Anaximenes reveals an internal dialectic within the Milesian school: thesis (determinate element: water), antithesis (indeterminate principle: ápeiron), synthesis (determinate element with quantitative mechanism: air). Each thinker inherits the problem of the previous one and reformulates it.
4. Variations of the principle in the other pre-Socratics
4.1 Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans (~570–495 BC): number
Pythagoras of Samos and his followers propose a radically different arché: number (arithmós). For the Pythagoreans, reality is not constituted by a material substance but by numerical relations and mathematical proportions. The structure of the cosmos is mathematical: musical intervals correspond to precise numerical ratios (octave = 2:1, fifth = 3:2, fourth = 4:3); the celestial bodies produce a “harmony of the spheres” determined by geometric proportions.
The Pythagorean principle is not a physical element but a formal structure. Number arises from the interaction between the limit (péras) and the unlimited (ápeiron) — echoing Anaximander, but transposing the question onto the formal plane. The even and the odd, the limited and the unlimited, generate numbers; numbers generate geometric figures; figures generate physical bodies.
As recorded by Aristotle (Metaphysics I, 5, 985b23-986a12), the Pythagoreans organized reality into ten fundamental pairs of opposites: limited/unlimited, odd/even, one/many, right/left, male/female, rest/motion, straight/curved, light/darkness, good/evil, square/oblong. The Pythagorean arché is thus not a substance but a structural principle — the mathematical order that governs the cosmos.
4.2 Heraclitus of Ephesus (~535–475 BC): fire and the logos
Heraclitus proposes fire (pŷr) as arché, but in a profoundly different way from the Milesians. Heraclitean fire is not merely a material element — it is the visible expression of the logos (λόγος), the rational law that governs all transformations of reality.
Heraclitus’ fundamental principle is becoming: everything flows (pánta rheî), everything is in constant transformation. But this flux is not chaotic — it is governed by the logos, a rational law that operates through the tension and harmony of opposites. Fire transforms into all things and all things into fire, in an eternal cycle that Heraclitus describes through the “way up and the way down” (fragment DK 22 B 60). According to fragment B 31a, the “turnings of fire” follow the sequence: fire → sea → earth (descending path) and earth → sea → fire (ascending path). The four-element sequence with “air” as an intermediate stage is a later systematization, of Aristotelian and Stoic influence.
War (pólemos) is “father of all and king of all” (DK 22 B 53): the conflict of opposites does not destroy order but constitutes it. The harmony of the cosmos is a “harmony of opposing tensions, as of the bow and the lyre” (DK 22 B 51). Hot and cold, day and night, life and death are not contraries that exclude each other but poles of the same dynamic unity.
Heraclitus’ arché is therefore twofold: materially it is fire; formally it is the logos. Fire is the most mutable element, the most visibly transformative — hence it is the fitting image for a cosmos in perpetual becoming. But the true principle is the rational law that governs those transformations.
4.3 Empedocles of Acragas (~490–430 BC): the four roots
Empedocles marks an important transition: he abandons monism (a single principle) and proposes pluralism. There is no single arché but four roots (rizómata): earth, water, air, and fire. These four elements are eternal, unalterable, and qualitatively distinct from one another. What we know as birth and death is, in reality, mixture and separation of these roots.
Two cosmic forces govern the combinations: Love (Philía) unites the elements, and Strife (Neîkos) separates them. The cosmos oscillates cyclically between two extremes: total unity under the dominion of Love (the Sphere, a perfect and homogeneous sphere) and total separation under the dominion of Strife (the four elements completely isolated). The world we know exists in the intermediate states of this cycle, as recorded in the fragments of On Nature preserved by Simplicius and Clement of Alexandria.
4.4 Anaxagoras of Clazomenae (~500–428 BC): nous and the homeomeries
Anaxagoras proposes that the material principle of the cosmos consists of the homeomeries (homoioméreia) — infinitely divisible particles of every quality. “Everything is in everything”: each thing contains portions of all other things, and what determines the identity of something is the predominance of certain seeds over the rest.
But the motive principle — that which orders and initiates movement — is the Nous (Νοῦς), the cosmic Intelligence. The Nous is separate from everything else, pure and unmixed, and it is what initiates the cosmic rotation (perichórēsis) from the originally undifferentiated mixture. Plato, in the Phaedo (97c–99d), reports that Socrates was enthusiastic upon hearing that Anaxagoras attributed the ordering of the cosmos to an intelligence — but was disappointed to find that, in practice, Anaxagoras resorted to mechanical causes to explain particular phenomena. Aristotle makes a similar criticism (Metaphysics I, 4, 985a18-21): Anaxagoras uses the Nous as a deus ex machina, invoking it only when he can find no other explanation.
4.5 Leucippus and Democritus (~460–370 BC): atoms and void
The atomists propose the most radically material arché of all: atoms (átoma, literally “uncuttable”) and the void (kenón). Atoms are infinite in number, indivisible, eternal, qualitatively identical to one another, differing only in shape, size, position, and arrangement. The void is the space in which atoms move.
Every phenomenon is explained mechanically through the movement, collision, and combination of atoms in the void. There is no purpose, no cosmic intelligence, no forces such as Love and Strife — only atoms and void, in eternal motion. Sensible qualities (colour, taste, warmth) exist “by convention” (nómōi); “in reality” (eteêi), only atoms and void exist, as reported by Aristotle (De Anima I, 2; Physics IV, 6-9) and Diogenes Laërtius (Lives, IX).
Atomism represents the furthest point of demythologization: the cosmos is pure mechanism, without design, without governance. Paradoxically, it is also the arché that most closely anticipates modern physics.
5. Arché in Aristotle: systematization and critique
5.1 Metaphysics I as a history of arché
Book I of Aristotle’s Metaphysics is the first great text in the history of philosophy. In it, Aristotle reconstructs the pre-Socratic tradition as a progressive search for the causes or principles (archaí) of reality. He organizes his predecessors according to the type of cause each one privileged:
- Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, Heraclitus → material cause (what things are made of)
- Empedocles (Love and Strife), Anaxagoras (Nous) → efficient cause (what produces motion)
- Pythagoreans → formal cause (the structure or form of things)
Aristotle observes that none of his predecessors arrived at the final cause — the for the sake of which, the purpose or end toward which things tend. It is this gap that his own philosophy aims to fill.
5.2 The four causes as a reformulation of arché
The doctrine of the four causes (Physics II, 3; Metaphysics I, 3) is Aristotle’s answer to the question of arché. To explain anything completely, one must specify:
- Material cause (hýlē): what something is made of — the bronze of the statue.
- Formal cause (eîdos/morphé): what something is, its definition or structure — the form of the statue.
- Efficient cause (tò hóthen hē kínēsis): what produced the thing — the sculptor.
- Final cause (tò hou héneka): the purpose for which the thing exists — beauty or honour to the god.
Each pre-Socratic, in Aristotle’s reading, grasped one of these causes, but none assembled them all. The pre-Socratic arché was partial — an incomplete answer to a question that only Aristotle formulated in full.
5.3 Critique of the predecessors
Aristotle is both heir to and critic of the pre-Socratics. He acknowledges that Thales inaugurated philosophical inquiry and that each subsequent thinker advanced the understanding of causes. But he criticizes the one-sidedness of each proposal: the Milesians reduced everything to the material cause; Anaxagoras intuited the efficient cause (the Nous) but did not develop it; the Pythagoreans approximated the formal cause but confused number with substance; no one reached the final cause (Metaphysics I, 7, 988a20-988b16).
This critique must be read with the reservations noted in section 2.3: Aristotle projects onto the pre-Socratics categories that are his own. But the philosophical value of his reconstruction is undeniable: by organizing the history of arché as a progression toward the four causes, Aristotle shows that the pre-Socratic question was richer than any individual answer managed to express.
6. Arché beyond the pre-Socratics
6.1 Medieval philosophy: the first cause
The concept of arché finds a natural continuation in medieval philosophy, particularly in the notion of the causa prima (first cause). Thomas Aquinas, in the Summa Theologiae (I, q. 2, a. 3), formulates the second way to the existence of God from the impossibility of an infinite regress in efficient causes: there must be a first uncaused cause, which everyone calls God. The question of arché thus becomes the question of the ultimate ground of the causal chain — and the answer is no longer a natural element but a necessary being.
This transposition is not arbitrary. The Neoplatonic tradition (Plotinus, Proclus) had already identified the arché with the One — an absolutely simple principle, prior to all determination, from which everything emanates. Christian medieval philosophy absorbed this tradition and articulated it with the theology of creation: the arché is God as creator ex nihilo.
6.2 Modern philosophy: the principle of sufficient reason
In modern philosophy, the question of arché resurfaces in a logico-metaphysical form: the principle of sufficient reason, explicitly formulated by Leibniz (Monadology, §32; Principles of Nature and Grace, §7): “no fact can be real or existing, no statement true, without a sufficient reason for its being so and not otherwise.” Every being must have a reason — a ground, an arché — that explains why it exists and why it is as it is.
Descartes, for his part, seeks the arché of knowledge: the cogito — “I think, therefore I am” — is the indubitable principle from which the entire edifice of knowledge can be reconstructed. Kant reformulates the question in transcendental terms: the principles (Grundsätze) of pure understanding are the conditions of possibility of experience — not principles of being, but of the intelligibility of being.
6.3 Contemporary philosophy: Heidegger and the question of ground
Martin Heidegger explicitly takes up the question of arché in several texts, notably The Question Concerning Technology (1953) and the essay The Principle of Reason (Der Satz vom Grund, 1957). For Heidegger, the entire history of Western metaphysics is the history of the search for a ground (Grund) — and this search culminates in modern technological thinking, which demands of every being a “reason” that justifies it, reducing it to standing reserve (Bestand).
Heidegger proposes that the true task of thought is not to find yet another ground but to question the very demand for grounding. The originary question of the pre-Socratics — why are there beings at all rather than nothing? — is, for Heidegger, the most radical question of philosophy, prior to any answer that the tradition has offered. To return to the arché means, for him, not to return to Thales or Anaximander but to recover the originary openness of the question — prior to the solidification of metaphysics into a system of causes and grounds.

8. Conclusion: arché as the founding gesture
The question of arché is the founding gesture of Western philosophy. With it, for the first time in the documented history of thought, human beings attempted to explain the totality of reality on the basis of a rational, natural, and universal principle — without recourse to mythical narratives or divine wills.
Each pre-Socratic answer carries a lasting philosophical insight. Thales teaches that multiplicity can be traced back to unity. Anaximander shows that the principle cannot be something determinate, on pain of being unable to generate what is contrary to it. Anaximenes introduces the idea of a continuous quantitative mechanism. Pythagoras discovers that the structure of reality can be formal rather than material. Heraclitus reveals that order is born from conflict. Empedocles recognizes that the irreducible plurality of elements requires forces to combine them. Anaxagoras separates the ordering intelligence from the ordered matter. The atomists demonstrate that mechanism can dispense with all purpose. And Aristotle, in systematizing these partial answers, shows that the question of arché was deeper than any of his predecessors realized.
Arché is not merely a historical concept. It is the most elementary form of a demand that runs through all of philosophy: the demand that reality be intelligible — that there be a reason, a principle, a why for things being as they are. This demand can be reformulated, criticized, radicalized; but it cannot be abandoned without abandoning philosophy itself. In this sense, all philosophy is, even today, a meditation on arché.
